Day 2 - Cu Chi Tunnels and Foodie Tour

It's amazing what a solid night of sleep can do for you! Today we were running alongside the herd of scooters, no longer afraid of their stampede. Okay okay I admit I'm obsessed with the frickin scooters! It's hard not to be - they are so loud and everywhere! There are 10 million people in Saigon so there's got to be at least 2.5 million scooters! And they are so entertaining - the things you see on them! My first surprise was a toddler sleeping across the handlebars while mom was driving. I love seeing the scooters crammed with families or balloons or speakers or a washing machine! I just can't get over them!

Speakers anyone?

Honorable mention

We had an early start to our day to beat the tour buses heading 90 minutes out of town to Cu Chi tunnels. They are the elaborate system of tunnels where the Viet Cong spent the war - vanishing underground and popping up again where US soldiers least expected them. We spent an hour walking through the jungle learning about their intelligence and strong will. It was pretty creepy especially since there's a shooting range echoing throughout the area with very loud machine guns. My favorite part was crawling through the tunnels behind Greg. I was giggling the whole time watching him - at one point he completely filled the tiny space.

We crawled through the entire 100 meter segment

It was hard enough lowering myself into the tiny hole and almost impossible to lift myself out!

Cute but shy school girl on drive back to city

Our evening activity was a foodie tour on scooter bikes which was a blast! We each rode on a bike all around the city with our new friends Truc and Huyen. It was fun trying different foods and exhilarating to actually be a part of the scooter world! And anyone who knows me would be proud to hear we went to a seafood restaurant and I tried everything (and lived to tell about it)! Our last stop was at a beautiful Vietnamese coffee house - not the wisest beverage to have at 11pm!

Watch out Saigon here we come!

I ate the whole stinkin thing from the tail to the legs to the eyeballs!

Who's heard of "octopus teeth"??

Cruising around Saigon

Mien Dong Thao Cafe house would be a hit in the United States!

Our new friends!
